1. Hunter 3D Wheel Alignment & Tyre Fitting

6 Questions
What is Hunter Hawkeye 3D optical wheel alignment and why is it superior to standard tracking?

Standard front-tracking laser gauges typically measure only the front-wheel toe angle relative to one another, completely ignoring whether the rear wheels are pushing the vehicle sideways (known as rear axle thrust offset).

Our computerised Hunter Hawkeye 3D optical alignment bay on Bank Street uses four high-resolution digital cameras and non-marking wheel clamp targets to measure all 14 chassis geometry angles simultaneously relative to the vehicle's true centreline. It checks your vehicle against factory manufacturer specifications, eliminates uneven shoulder tyre wear, centres the steering wheel, and restores motorway fuel efficiency.

How much do brand new tyres cost and what brands do you stock?

Brand new tyres at GC Auto Centre start from just £39.58 fully balanced and fitted. We supply and fit 18 leading manufacturers across all price tiers:

  • Budget: RoadX, Dynamo, and Admiral.
  • Mid-Range: Hankook, Kumho, Yokohama, Avon, Falken, Firestone, Uniroyal, Cooper, and Vredestein.
  • Premium: Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Pirelli, and Dunlop.

Browse our complete catalogue on the All 18 Tyre Brands Hub or call our tyre bay on 01902 442044 for same-day delivery and fitting.

Do you sell second-hand or part-worn tyres?

No, absolutely not. At GC Auto Centre, we strictly supply and fit 100% brand new tyres only. Trading Standards audits reveal that over 90% of part-worn tyres sold across the UK contain structural flaws, hidden bead tearing, or dangerous internal belt damage. Because brand new budget tyres start from just £39.58 fully fitted, you receive complete road safety, factory structural warranties, and full tread depth without risk.

How do I know if my wheel alignment or tracking is out?

Common warning signs that your vehicle geometry has been knocked out of alignment by Wolverhampton potholes or kerb impacts include:

  • The car pulls or drifts to the left or right when driving straight on a level dual carriageway.
  • The steering wheel spokes remain crooked or off-centre when travelling straight ahead.
  • The inner or outer shoulders of your tyres are scrubbed smooth while the central tread remains deep.
  • A loose, wandering sensation when cornering on the A454 or motorway.

We recommend booking a Hunter 3D alignment check whenever you replace tyres or replace suspension components.

Can any puncture be repaired, and how long does it take?

We carry out safe, permanent puncture repairs strictly adhering to British Standard BS AU 159. A puncture is legally repairable if:

  • The puncture is located within the central 60-70% of the tyre tread (the minor repair zone).
  • The puncture hole does not exceed 6mm in diameter.
  • The internal casing has not suffered run-flat heat damage or sidewall cords separation.

Puncture repairs take approximately 25-30 minutes while you wait in our customer reception on Bank Street.

What is the difference between wheel alignment and wheel balancing?

Wheel Alignment adjusts the angles of the wheels so they are perfectly perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each other and the chassis centerline (correcting steering pull and uneven tyre scrub).

Wheel Balancing balances the distribution of weight around the rotating tyre and alloy assembly by applying small counterweights. Unbalanced wheels cause a pronounced steering wheel vibration or wobble between 50mph and 70mph.

2. Vehicle Servicing & Manufacturer Warranty

5 Questions
Will having my car serviced at GC Auto Centre invalidate my new car warranty?

No, absolutely not. You are entitled to have your vehicle serviced at an independent workshop without affecting manufacturer warranty coverage.

At GC Auto Centre, all car servicing procedures strictly follow factory service schedules, using Original Equipment (OEM) specification filters and manufacturer-approved synthetic lubricants (such as Castrol and Shell). Your warranty remains fully protected at a fraction of franchised dealer labour rates.

Can you update in-vehicle digital service records and reset service lights?

Yes. We are able to update service records directly on the vehicle, such as adding service reports to the iDrive history on BMW models and resetting the service due warning indicator across all vehicle makes and models. Your completed maintenance is recorded accurately and your physical service book is stamped upon collection.

What is the difference between an Interim Service and a Full Service?

Interim Service (every 6 months or 6,000 miles): Ideal for high-mileage commuters or delivery drivers. Includes engine oil drain and refill with spec synthetic oil, oil filter replacement, fluid top-ups, and a 35-point safety inspection.

Full Service (every 12 months or 12,000 miles): A comprehensive 50+ checkpoint overhaul. Includes everything in an interim service plus air filter replacement, cabin pollen filter, spark plugs / fuel filter scrutiny, complete brake strip and caliper inspection, suspension joint testing, and auxiliary belt checks.

Do you service trade vans and commercial fleets?

Yes. Our workshop is equipped with heavy-duty commercial vehicle bay lifts handling short, medium, and long-wheelbase vans (Ford Transit, Vauxhall Vivaro, Mercedes Sprinter, VW Transporter). Explore our dedicated Van Servicing & Commercial Fleet maintenance page for priority business booking.

Can you service electric and hybrid vehicles?

Yes. Our technicians are trained in high-voltage safety procedures for self-charging hybrids (HEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), and battery electric vehicles (BEV). Learn more on our dedicated Hybrid Vehicles Servicing page covering inverter cooling circuits, regenerative braking, and traction battery health.

3. Brakes, Suspension & Mechanical Repairs

5 Questions
Why are my brakes squealing or grinding when I slow down?

A high-pitched squeal is typically caused by the built-in acoustic wear indicator touching the disc, alerting you that your brake pads have worn down to their final 2mm. A harsh grinding noise indicates that the friction material has completely worn away, causing metal-on-metal contact between the steel backing plate and the brake disc.

Do not delay booking an appointment: visit our Brakes Service page or call our team for an immediate disc and pad thickness check.

What causes a knocking or clunking noise when driving over bumps?

Knocking or clunking noises over uneven Wolverhampton road surfaces typically stem from play in anti-roll bar drop links, worn lower wishbone ball joints, degraded rubber suspension bushes, or broken coil springs. We diagnose and rectify chassis play on our Suspension Repairs bay, replacing components before they cause MOT failure advisories.

When should I replace my vehicle's cambelt (timing belt)?

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing the timing belt every 5 to 7 years or between 60,000 and 100,000 miles (whichever comes first). Unlike other maintenance items, a failing cambelt rarely gives prior warning—if it snaps while the engine is running, pistons will strike open valves, causing catastrophic engine failure.

Learn more about our timing kits on our Cambelt & Water Pump Replacement page.

How do I know if my clutch or dual-mass flywheel (DMF) needs replacing?

Classic signs of clutch degradation include engine revs rising without the car accelerating accordingly (clutch slipping), a burning friction smell when reversing uphill, a heavy or spongey clutch pedal, or difficulty engaging 1st and reverse gears. A rattling shudder when idling often indicates dual-mass flywheel failure. We supply and fit LuK, Sachs, and Valeo kits on our Clutch Replacement bay.

What parts warranty do you provide on mechanical repairs?

All mechanical replacement parts and workshop fitting labour carried out at GC Auto Centre are backed by our 12 Months or 12,000 Miles Warranty (whichever occurs first). We install brand-new components from Tier-1 OEM manufacturers (such as Bosch, Brembo, Pagid, Sachs, and LuK). Full terms are detailed on our Terms of Service page.

4. Engine Diagnostics, Air Con & Electrical

4 Questions
My Check Engine or DPF light is on. What does your diagnostic scan include?

Rather than simply reading and clearing fault codes, our technicians use Snap-On and Bosch dealer-calibre scan tools to interrogate live sensor datastreams (air-fuel ratios, boost pressure, EGR flow, and DPF differential soot pressures). We identify the root mechanical or electrical cause before replacing any parts. Read more on our Engine Diagnostics page.

What is the difference between R134a and R1234yf air conditioning re-gas?

R134a is the traditional refrigerant found in vehicles manufactured before 2014. R1234yf is an environmentally compliant gas legally mandated for all new passenger cars produced since 2017 to reduce atmospheric greenhouse potential.

At GC Auto Centre, we operate dedicated recovery and recharge stations for both gas types, including automated vacuum hold leak checks and cabin anti-bacterial sanitisation. See our Air Con Re-gas service.

Why do Stop-Start car batteries need to be digitally coded to the vehicle?

Modern vehicles with start-stop technology incorporate an intelligent Battery Management System (BMS). As a battery ages, the alternator increases charge current to compensate for cell degradation. If a new AGM or EFB battery is installed without registering the replacement code, the alternator continues to overcharge the battery, leading to premature battery death and electrical warning faults. We code all battery replacements on our Batteries Service bay.

Why is my car overheating or losing coolant?

Coolant loss can stem from stone-chipped radiator cores, split rubber hoses, failing water pump mechanical seals, or leaking thermostat housings. Internal coolant loss may indicate cylinder head gasket failure. We perform cooling system pressure testing and chemical block checks. View our Coolant Change & Flush service.

5. Workshop Booking, Pricing & Bank Street Bay

4 Questions
Do I need to pay anything upfront when booking online?
